The San Francisco Youth Peace Association (SFYPA) held a badminton charity tournament on July 14th, 2024, to raise donations for Lantern Foundation’s campaigns. In total, the event fundraised around $1500 through ticket sales and other donations, with 11 doubles teams and almost 30 people in attendance. All of the proceeds from the event will go toward Lantern Foundation’s partnership with the Beijing SmileAngel Children’s Hospital and support kids in need of cleft lip or palate surgery.
SFYPA reached out to Lantern Foundation in early June with the idea of hosting a badminton tournament to fundraise for one of our projects. This collaboration was extremely exciting for us because it meant that Lantern Foundation and our mission could expand further into the community. Tournament directors Louis Li, Katie Li, and Jerry Liu, who are part of SFYPA, led the initiative in preparing for the event.
The badminton tournament was held at the Synergy Badminton Academy in Fremont, California. The event was open to all skill levels and ages with prizes of $250, $150, and $100 for first, second, and third place respectively. For the tournament, there were 11 pairs of doubles teams, consisting of a mix between kids and young adults. Each team played against each other, and the team that ended with the most wins at the end of the competition was crowned the champion. Starting at 8:30 in the morning, teams played for 4.5 hours until they completed all ten of their games. The event finished off with the top teams being awarded for their excellent performance and sportsmanship!
Established in July 2021, SFYPA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting young people from China and America together. They work to bridge the gaps between the two countries and promote understanding among those from China and those from America. As an organization that seeks to educate Americans about medical and educational challenges and humanitarian issues in rural China, Lantern Foundation aligns closely with SFYPA, which is why we are thrilled to work with them to enhance mutual understanding between the two countries.
We are very happy that Lantern Foundation had the opportunity to connect and partner with other local youth organizations such as SFYPA through events like this one. Stay tuned for more collaborations in the future, and sign up for our newsletter to receive updates about upcoming events!
