This past September, a group of Lantern Foundation’s Student Ambassadors led the way in organizing a fundraiser in support of children with cleft lips and palates in rural China. Effie Yin (13), Benson He (13), and William Fu (11) participated in the Dublin Community Garage Sale from 8AM to 1PM on Saturday, September 28th.
Along with the help of Brianna He (11) and Sissi Yin (10), the group of students collected items from their homes and from the community to put up for sale. These items included clothes, toys, stuffed animals, household supplies, and more. Our Ambassadors also were hard at work preparing the necessary materials for the garage sale, including securing tables and tents, printing out Lantern Foundation’s flyers and posters, and organizing the items for the garage sale.

Waking up early in the morning, Yin, He, and Fu arrived at the event location early to set up for the garage sale. Throughout the day, they interacted with potential customers, advertised the different goods they were selling, and collected donations from customers. In total, the trio made almost $350 in sales! It’s certainly not easy to sell so many items only labeled for $2-5, so we commend them for their hard work.
Qiupin Yuan, our volunteer and project leader for the Guangxi region, congratulates these three Ambassadors, writing “Philanthropy always begins from small steps. These youth are making incredible steps toward advancing big, tangible change in the future. Great job everyone!”

Reflecting on the event, Benson He states, “As one of the co-organizers in Lantern Foundation’s garage sale, it was super enjoyable to be able to meet new, friendly customers and socialize with them. It was so cool seeing how big of an impact we made just from selling used products such as art materials and clothes at an affordable price. I’m very glad we did this garage sale and proud of us.”
We applaud our Youth Ambassadors for their dedication to our cause in helping kids in rural China. To join our Ambassador team, visit https://lanternfoundationus.org/volunteer/. There is no formal application, and all you have to do is find a meaningful way to support Lantern Foundation!
